Brennan's Map

"When I was in KroBar I saw the magazine Oxford Road Corridor. I picked it up hoping for easy inspiration for our EM project to do with earth and when I turned to page 21 I found an article about Tim Brennan's manoeuvers and found a treasure trove of guided walks. His artistic approach and visual emphasis not only captured the spirit of earth and its navigation but also felt anthropological in nature." - Al

"If there is a behavior that encapsulates human experience, it is the need to move from one place to another. For Tim Brennan, this movement provides an excellent opportunity to consider the meaning behind the places we normally pass without a second thought. The idea behind his sustainability walking tour is to raise awareness of the spaces around Manchester that are making conscious efforts, and important strides, towards an environment-conscious city. During our journey along his prescribed route, we took time to appreciate buildings we recognized if only by sight at first and ultimately learned how they contribute to an even greater purpose. On every walk, there is something new to see." - Gillian

Zero Carbon

The focus on a metric of what sustainability means seems to be linked directly to carbon emissions. The goal to be a "zero carbon city by 2038" is central to plans of creating a sustainable city.

What is sustainability?

Brennan's definition of sustainability lacks the specificity needed to guide our project so as a result we looked elsewhere to see how it was defined. We chose to use Manchester County Council's definition to create a more concrete idea of what sustainability within the city means and how it can be navigated.

"Our mission is to make Manchester a healthy, green, socially just city where everyone can thrive."
(Manchester County Council, Zero Carbon City, 2024)

  3. Transport and flying

  4. Food

  5. The things we buy and throw away

  6. Green infrastructure and nature based solutions
